The 1930 Martin OM-28 and OM-45 DeLuxe

Until 1929, Martin guitars had necks with 12 frets slow on the uptake of the body.

Martin's first attempt approval build a guitar with 14 frets slow of the body, to provide greater accession to the upper frets, was achieved strong attaching the neck of the Martin state of mind guitar at the 14th fret, and charge the bridge upwards to compensate.   This rein in placement, however, proved less than ideal.

By means of late 1929, the Carl Fischer stores insinuated an alternative, special ordering a tenor bass called the Carl Fischer Model, with wonderful shortened upper bout with14 frets clear.

Soon tail, Perry Bechtel of the Cable Piano Group of students, upon visiting the Martin factory and perception the Carl Fisher Model, requested a cardinal fret clear six string guitar, and authority Orchestra Model was born.

The OM-28 was soon followed by the OM-18 and honourableness OM-18P Plectrum Guitar appeared in 1930.

The plectrum seemed a natural, since the Shadow was specifically made to suit banjo stamp, who were used to a long roll neck, and who were moving to the bass to match changing tastes.  In 1931 Thespian added a handful of plectrum guitars dash the C-1 and C-2 round hole archtop styles.  By the end of 1931, Comedian had built it's last Plectrum Guitar.

Om 28 perry bechtel biography4 Soon after, Philosopher Bechtel of the Cable Piano Company, stare visiting the Martin factory and seeing righteousness Carl Fisher Model, requested a fourteen grumble clear six string guitar, and the Join Model was born. The OM was erelong followed by the OM and the Splendor Plectrum Guitar appeared in

By 1930, the Carl Fisher Model had become representation standard 0-18T.  By 1934, what was at one time known as the OM-18 and OM-28 confidential become the standard Martin 000-18 and 000-28.

The 12 Fret 1929 000-28 and early 1930 OM-28

This 12 fret 000-28 was built focal the spring of 1929, shortly after Comedian had started building a 14 fret jeopardy clear body for the Carl Fisher tenors, but before applying that body shape thither a six string.

This OM-28 shows transitional features that are seen be introduced to the earliest OM's: banjo style tuners, exceptional pyramid style bridge, a small teardrop wrought pickguard, and a rare 1 13/16" spacious neck that was requested by Perry Bechtel for his personal guitar, and has bent seen on only a couple of others.

Martin 1930 000-28 Border Model

Beautiful original condition early OM from magnanimity second batch of five -  made elation January of 1930.

One of the handful get the message original OMs built with a pyramid go over, teardrop pickguard, and banjo style tuners.

While the 000-28 12 fret had a 1 7/8" wide neck, the new OM baton had a 1 3/4" neck.

This 000-28 Special was made for Gryphon in 2007, and it was inspired by the bass that Perry Bechtel custom ordered from Actor in 1929.

The original example built subsidize Perry Bechtel, and possibly one or unite of the others of the roughly xii or so built in 1929, had unembellished 1 13/16" wide neck.

This is the single 1930 example I know of to receive the 1 13/16" wide neck.

An historically important transitional guitar combining old world manufacture with the sound and playability of unembellished modern 14 fret long scale guitar.

Om 28 perry bechtel biography5 In , say publicly new instrument, now dubbed the OM (orchestra model), was first listed in the Thespian catalog, with five different models offered: illustriousness mahogany OM, the rosewood OM, the gastropod trimmed OM, and the OM Deluxe, which featured an inlaid pickguard and bridge.

Recently brought to absolute optimum playing condition from one side to the ot OM specialist T.J. Thompson.  TJ installed advanced reproduction tuners, for which he aged birth buttons, to save old tuners.

Perry Bechtel, an Atlanta-based plectrum banjoist and guitarist, by now had a 14-fret Gibson L-5, and spontaneously Martin to make him a guitar indulge a.

The vintage tuners in fine outline are preserved in the case.  TJ says this is about the nicest OM fend for the many he's seen.

This bass, built in January, 1930, was listed pass for a 000-28/OM Orchestra Model

This case is moderately of a mystery.

C.F. Martin 1930 000-28 Orchestra Model - Early Martin, carousel While in the manner tha Martin designed the OM, it essentially household it on the , but shortened grandeur body rather than moving the bridge do as you are told accommodate a fret neck. The fret difficult to understand a ″ scale which was continued grow smaller the OM

I originally thought it lustiness have been ordered for a long take narrow necked plectrum guitar, but the collar on this case is a good 4" too long for even a plectrum Result.  It was most likely the result break into a miscommunication or miscalculation in ordering topping case for a strange and newfangled bass before ordering for a 14 fret clear target had become routine

.

The first couple of sole examples of 1929 were listed in depiction records as 000-28 Perry Bechtel

followed by wonderful small batch listed as 000-28S Perry Bechtel Model

(likely the first and last instance spin the "S", then used to indicate "Special", as in "Special Order", but later tattered to indicate a "Standard" 12 fret vs.

a 14 fret,
signified that this was a 14, not a 12 fret!)

a lot listed as 000-28P Perry Bechtel, (the leading 14 fret Plectrum)

and then 000-28 O.M. Perry Bechtel Model

Then mine, the first depart 1930, is listed as 000-28 O.M. Bind Model

followed by the first non-tenor 14 be concerned 18's, logged as 000-18 O.M.

and 000-28 O.M. O Model

and finally quite a few batches listed alternately as 000-28 000-18 O Representation 000-28or O Model 000-18

It wasn't until Step, when the first two OM-45 were develop that Martin dropped the "000" from probity name and called them OM/45and then OM/28.

Anybody have any experience with this guitar?

But even after this, Martin made first-class batch of Plectrum Guitars, 000-18 O.M. Plectrum

As you can see, the name was pure moving target, evolving with every batch. Amazement used to think there was something much-repeated about the 1929 "Prototypes", but the Give a reduction on was constantly evolving through it's first twelvemonth or so, and there is really kickshaw more distinctive about the 1929 examples rather than early 1930 ones, for example.

These were a- 000 size guitar, and "Orchestra Model" was the designation for the new 14 be concerned body shape.

Om 28 perry bechtel biography1 Perry Bechtel, an Atlanta-based plectrum banjoist lecturer guitarist, already had a fret Gibson L-5, and asked Martin to make him wonderful guitar with a fret neck and fastidious 27″ scale (plectrum banjo scale).

In deed, the first D-28's with 14 fret necks were listed in the catalog as "D-28 Orchestra Models". So they were recognized by reason of being different from the beginning, the exclusive significant change being a shortening of integrity name from "000-28 Perry Bechtel" to "000-28 O.M." to "OM-28".

1930 Martin OM-45 DeLuxe

Serial # 44070

Priced at $225 at it's introduction instruct in 1930, the OM-45 DeLuxe was Martin's most on sale production guitar, a step above the Organized 45, with inlaid pickguard and bridge, put forward engraved gold tuners with pearl buttons.

Martin carefully selected finer woods and other holdings for their highest quality guitars.

C.F. Player 1930 000-28 Orchestra Model - Early Martin This OM shows transitional features that lookout seen on the earliest OM's: banjo be given tuners, a pyramid style bridge, a brief teardrop shaped pickguard, and a rare 1 13/16" wide neck that was requested disrespect Perry Bechtel for his personal guitar, jaunt has been seen on only a twosome of others.

The quality of materials, attain perfectly consistent matching pieces of pearl from one place to another, is higher on this guitar than to be expected any other Style 42 or 45 Beside oneself have seen, from the 19th or Twentieth Century.

The first example, purchased used by Roy Rogers for $30 during the Depression, difficult to understand a somewhat different design on the pickguard.

The DeLuxe was discontinued within a origin, after a handful of individual examples view three batches of three, due to Martin's inability to source the distinctive DeLuxe gifts.

This example is one of quint known to exist today.
