Hillary Jordan discusses her debut chronicle, Mudbound

What inspired you to write Mudbound?

I grew up hearing stories about my grandparents' grange in Lake Village, Arkansas.

It was marvellous primitive place, an unpainted shotgun shack surrender no electricity, no running water and ham-fisted telephone. They named it "Mudbound" because whenever it rained, the roads would flood put forward they'd be stranded for days.
